Why Do Parents Bring Their Kids to a Chiropractor?

little girl smiling while chiropractor adjusts jawChildren aren’t small adults. Their bodies are still developing, and the way they move can change quickly. That’s why I approach a paediatric visit differently from an adult appointment.

By Dr Will McKinnon (Chiropractor)

For older kids, techniques are gentle and low-force, often using a handheld instrument or light fingertip pressure. For babies, the focus is on assessment, very light soft tissue work and practical advice for parents, in line with Chiropractic Board of Australia guidance.

Common Reasons Parents Bring Their Children In

  • Growth spurts. Some children notice temporary stiffness or aches as their bodies change.
  • School bags and screens. Heavy backpacks and long stretches looking down at devices can leave kids feeling stiff or uncomfortable.
  • Bumps and falls. Children climb and tumble constantly, usually right after you’ve said “be careful.” Sometimes parents notice soreness or a change in how their little one moves afterwards.
  • Sport. From junior footy to swimming squads, repetitive movements and changing training loads can leave kids feeling sore or stiff.
  • Changes in posture or movement. Sometimes a parent simply notices their child sitting, standing or moving differently and wants to have it looked at. Those changes may be temporary, but an assessment can help clarify whether there is a musculoskeletal reason for what you’re noticing.

What Happens at a Visit?

I start by listening. Parents know their kids better than anyone, so I want to hear what you’ve noticed and what brought you in. From there, I’ll take a thorough history and complete an age-appropriate assessment of posture, movement and spinal function.

I’ll explain what I’m looking at as we go, and your child sets the pace. Need a break, cuddle or snack? That’s absolutely fine.

A Closer Look Can Bring Clarity

At NT Chiropractic Health & Wellness Centre, I start by listening. Parents know their kids better than anyone, so I want to hear what you’ve noticed and what brought you in. From there, I’ll take a thorough history and complete an age-appropriate assessment of posture, movement and spinal function.

If you’re looking for paediatric chiropractic care in Darwin, I’ll explain what I’m seeing as we go and let you know whether chiropractic care may be suitable or whether another health professional would be a better fit.
