By Dr Sheree Moore (Chiropractor)
Nothing happens on the table until we’ve talked. I’ll ask about your child’s health history, birth, milestones, activity levels and anything you’ve noticed about how they move or sit. It’s also your chance to ask questions. No question is too small, and I’d much rather you ask than wonder.
Starting With an Age-Appropriate Assessment
Next, I’ll look at posture, movement and spinal function in a way that’s appropriate for your child’s age. For toddlers, that might happen on your lap or while they play. Older kids often like being shown what I’m checking and why.
I’ll explain what I find and talk through any recommendations. Nothing goes ahead without your consent, and your child’s comfort and willingness matter too. The goal is to make sure you understand why anything is being suggested before making a decision.
What Does an Adjustment Feel Like?
This is the part most parents want to know about. The adjusting techniques we use for kids are gentle and typically involve a low-force instrument or light fingertip pressure.
Think about checking a tomato for ripeness: firm enough to feel, but light enough not to bruise it. To many parents watching, it looks more like a gentle massage than what they’d pictured.
For babies, the focus is on assessment, very light soft tissue work and practical advice, in line with Chiropractic Board of Australia guidance. At NT Chiropractic Health & Wellness Centre, the approach is always matched to your little one’s age and comfort.
Helping Your Child Feel at Ease
A little preparation can help, whether that means bringing a favourite toy, booking around naps or simply explaining that the chiropractor is going to check how their back moves. If you’re bringing your child in for chiropractic care in Darwin, I’ll explain what I find, whether a follow-up is recommended and when another health professional should be involved.
