Recently, I completed an 8-day hike up Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with my best mate. The highlight was reaching the summit at sunrise in -15 degrees and running (falling, really) back down because it was too steep to walk with dead legs.
But the unexpected gift wasn’t the view. There was no phone service, no notifications, no emails, no scrolling. Just movement, nature, and presence. What stood out most wasn’t just the mental and physical challenge, but the clarity and calm that came from disconnecting.
Why Adventures Like This Matter
New and immersive experiences can do something powerful for the body and mind. Less digital noise may support mental clarity and mood, while natural light exposure and reduced screen time can encourage healthier sleep patterns and a calmer overall state.
This aligns closely with what we focus on at NT Chiropractic Health & Wellness Centre. Promoting overall wellbeing is central to everything we do. Chiropractic care aims to improve how the body functions overall, which may help you feel calmer, recover more easily, and rest better.
Sleep, Screens, and Your Nervous System
Natural light and reduced screen time were two big contributors to improved sleep on the mountain. For many of our practice members, restful sleep is a daily struggle, and the nervous system is often part of the picture.
Some people report improved sleep after chiropractic care by easing physical tension and helping the body function more comfortably overall.
The Power of Switching Off
You don’t need to climb a mountain to experience these benefits. Small changes can make a real difference:
- Set phone-free periods, for example, the first hour after waking or before bed
- Leave your phone behind on walks or workouts
- Spend time outdoors without digital distractions
Even reducing screen time by 30 to 60 minutes a day can help improve focus, posture, sleep, and overall wellbeing. And if you’re pushing yourself physically, whether hiking, running, or training, sports chiropractic care may help your body as you stay active. Supporting recovery and keeping your body moving well means you can do more of what you love, for longer.
