We’ve now sadly said goodbye to the beautiful Dry Season, and those hot, sticky days have well and truly arrived. I’m already starting to see the effects of the rising heat and humidity, with many practice members mentioning similar things.
This time of year brings big shifts, not just in the weather, but also in our energy, mood, and overall wellbeing. It’s common to feel fatigued, irritable, tight through the muscles and joints, and generally a bit out of balance during this transition.
The good news? With a little smart preparation, you can help your body and nervous system adapt to the build-up with more ease.
1. Support Your Body
- Hydration: Everyone should be drinking a minimum of 3 litres of water per day and even more if you’re active or working outdoors. Add electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium) or coconut water to improve hydration.
- Limit caffeine and alcohol: Both can dehydrate the body and increase fatigue.
- Eat light and fresh: Choose nutrient-rich, whole foods. Magnesium-rich foods (like leafy greens, nuts, and seeds) are especially great for reducing fatigue and muscle tension.
2. Exercise Smart
- Move your workouts to the early morning or late evening when it’s cooler.
- Balance intense exercise with restorative movement such as yoga, swimming, or walking.
- Listen to your body, heat stress can sneak up quickly.
- Make the most of indoor activity options! I’ve been loving Gecko Climb lately, super fun and a workout. What a win!
3. Calm Your Nervous System
Everyone knows the build-up can test our mood and patience — there’s a reason we call it “mango madness”! Supporting your nervous system is just as important as staying hydrated.
- Take a few minutes each day to breathe deeply, move gently, practice gratitude, or ground yourself outdoors.
- Maintain a consistent sleep routine: avoid screens and bright lights before bed, use blackout curtains or blinds, cooling sheets, and fans.
- Keep up with your regular chiropractic adjustments to help your nervous system adapt to seasonal stress and maintain healthy spinal function.
4. Embrace the Season
The build-up can be challenging, but it also signals renewal and transformation. The first storm is always such a highlight, often bringing a sense of emotional and physical release.
Allow yourself to slow down a little, rest more, and embrace the rhythm of the changing season.
